For today’s assignment, please grab some paper and charcoal (or any writing utensil that you are comfortable using), and watch this video!
(Remember, “gesture drawings” are quick sketches emphasizing movement or action… take a deep breath, put pencil or charcoal to paper, and try to capture the shape of the elephant as best as you can. Work quickly.)
Giveaway: If you do the assignment, leave your comment for a chance to win this drawing (from Lab 37: Random Pick Drawings, page 101, mixed media on paper, about 9″x9″). (Remember, you don’t need to show me your results… if you comment, I will believe that you did the assignment!)
The winner will be picked after 12 noon Pacific time, Tuesday, July 27th. Happy drawing!

Love that elephant painting. I wouldn’t mind having it on the wall framed.
Something fresh and new about it. Good job. Jan C.

Well, my 3 year old grandson recognized it as an elephant, so I guess it wasn’t too bad!!

Hi Carla, Have been drawing, painting and collaging all my life but long to include more whimsy, fun and humor in my work. I think you may have pointed me in the right direction, at least my page of gesture drawings of elephants made me laugh.

Was happy and surprised at my first drawing which was blind. Much better than trying to draw it while looking.
Loved the movement, and the surprise of the cat being there.
Thanks

My husband can tell it’s supposed to be an elephant… I can tell I need to practice my one minute gesture drawing. Thanks for the challenge. This was fun!

Sweet video. I thought the elephant was tiny until I saw it next to kitty. Thanks for this fun assignment. My kids have all had the worst tummy flu and this is just what I needed to escape the yucky zone!

This was such fun. Got three elephants done in one minute but they don’t really look like elephants – just moving blobs.

They are marching on Flickr.
It was fun, and I was drawing longer than a minute.

Well I ended up inadvertently cheating because my ancient Mac can’t really do streaming video, so the elephant stayed in one place for quite a while–more than a minute, maybe. But I did draw him!

I am loving your book and these assignments are great. …just what I need right now….a good kick in the gluteus maximus. I would cherish your elephant and frame him for all to adore:) and expel his inspiration upon me.

My sister sent this to me. I grabbed an envelope and pencil…and am quite please with my three little guys running into each other as they trundle across my name printed on the top of the envelope. I am saving this one.
I may just xerox it and continue working on it…. What fun.
