It’s time to admit that I’m not an “illustrator.”
Every week I anticipate receiving the Illustration Friday topic. I promise myself that THIS week, I will do it. No matter what.
I’m a smart person, I tell myself. I used to work in graphic design — I was a magazine art director, for crying out loud — so I have a “feel” for illustration…
Then comes the impossible prompt, such as “sprout” or “crash.” What the heck? How am I supposed to illustrate THOSE words? They must be getting harder, these prompts. Yes.
A few days later I might go over to the IF website to see the one or two geniuses who were able to come up with something. Invariably I am accosted by dozens and dozens of witty, smart, well-drawn, highly creative solutions to whatever word Penelope sends to us.
(sigh.)
I am supposed to be doing a Jeruselum scene for a client. I finished one yesterday and they politely said, “not quite, try again”. I looked at it this morning and it looks more like Atlantic City! So I agree. It’s very hard to take your style and add imagery/ideas/prompts. Even changing from my usual trees to palm trees, I have to draw them over and over and over to get them to feel like me.

I think you would do great stuff for IF. I try to just relax and have fun with it — that’s thes the key for me. And the great thing about IF is that you can do something that only partially relates to the topic, it doesn’t have to be literal. Like for for sprout you could have used one of your sweet little girl paintings. A lil sprout!
