  • This is the fourth year I’m participating in the 100 Artist Show at the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery in Salem, Oregon. 100 artists interpret a theme and the proceeds are donated to a charity organization.
  • Here is the formal press release:
  • “What’s Inside-Artists Exploring the Potential for Change” 100 Artist Show
  • February 5th – March 1st, 2008
  • Opening reception: First Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 5-7pm.
  • During the month of February, the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery will be presenting “What’s Inside-Exploring the Potential for Change” the 5th annual 100 Artists show. Participating artists, including artist, Carla Sonheim, from Salida, CO(!), received a wooden box through the mail and were asked to use this as their starting point for their piece of art, with a completed maximum size of 8” x 8”. Each box was sent “as is”, and was not packaged, but rather processed directly by the postal service firsthand. The stamps and addresses on the back will remain a part of the artwork for identification and for evidence of the actual mailing. Each artist was asked to involve a young child and ask them one of four questions concerning their feelings of what makes them feel safe. The answers for these questions are inside the finished boxes for the viewer to see and read.
  • Artists have had over two months to transform, build, infuse, reduce or reinvent the box into their work of art.
  • The exhibit will open on Tuesday, February 6th at 10:00 am pacific time. The public will be able to bid on their favorite artwork. Beginning bids are $50.00 with increments of $5.00 with a maximum of $200. The entire show will be posted online at www.zeekgallery.com. Calls can be made to the gallery to place bids: 503-581-3229. The bidding ends February 29th, 2008 at 6:00 pm pacific time.

  • Wes answered question # 2, “What does it feel like to be powerful?”, with: “Good. Almost Evil. No, good.”mlzdetail3.jpg
  • My artwork is somewhat personal and I’m not really sure if it’s right for a gallery show… but oh well. It was this or nothing, as I had SUCH A HARD TIME with this project in the beginning… the first painting ended up in the fire.
  • I apologize for all of the bullets… I can’t figure out what’s wrong the formatting…

  • I am enjoying my second full day without a debilatating earache.
  • I think it’s important to take the time now to give thanks for all the days in my life that I didn’t have an earache.
  • It might be good for you, too, to do the same.
  • In fact, I don’t think it would be too much to offer up a little apology to each and every day that I forgot to thank that I didn’t have an earache.

  • I spent some time this morning at Marissa’s blog and site… love her paintings! She also creates inspiring podcasts and wrote and illustrated an e-book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Take a peek!
  • Oh! And I just found this blog by Nancy in India.

I’ve lost many days and nights now to a raging earache… it won’t go away, even with antibiotics (on the second round now)… I’m losing my normally cheerful demeanor… I can’t BELIEVE it’s still hanging on. Oh help!

  • * * * * * YOU’RE INVITED * * * * *
  • Wednesday, January 30, 2008
  • 6:30 – 8:30pm
  • West Seattle, WA
  • If you live in or near Seattle, please join me for an evening of India goodness on Wednesday the 30th. I’ll share all the treasures from my trip last summer, where I stayed at an orphanage and taught art for three weeks. Come see some of the children’s original artwork, journal pages, and artwork inspired by the trip…
  • A printmaking table will be set up so you can make your own “temple” relief print from a plate designed by one of the students.
  • Take a piece of India home! A sale table will feature antique gypsy textiles, fabric and ribbon goodie bags, original silk paintings, some carved wood stamps and more.
  • I’ll also make card sets, journals and other goodies… a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the Sri Ram Orphanage on all product featuring the children’s art.
  • I’ll also bring all the information in case you are interested in doing something like this in the future!
  • Children encouraged to join the fun… Please come!

  • Above: My boys, about a week ago.
  • 2008 Resolutions: I don’t have any! (Never works.) But I do believe that stating intentions is important, and when you say things out loud, they happen.
  1. I would really like to pursue book illustration more seriously this year.
  2. We would like to move to Seattle in 2008.
  3. Get Christer happily married in June!
  4. Figure out a regular venue to teach art to children… I really miss it.
  5. Complete the 10 Things project.

  • I couldn’t resist posting this collaborative effort between Wes and I when he was four. (All I really did was color a little bit, and transcribe.)
  • Can you read it? If not, it says: “Goobleygar Monster – a nice one. If he eats food, he’ll die. (So he doesn’t need arms.) A bad guy chops his head off because he didn’t like him. (But the bad guy didn’t chop his legs off.) (Or his pants.)”
  • A Goobleygar Monster was one of many characters Wes talked about at this age.
