Softish Birds

I broke down and purchased a set of gouache paints the other day, and I’ve just begun to experiment (Holbien Artists’ Gouache, set of 12).

This is the fun part… I can “play” with the new media and not judge my results (because, after all, I don’t know a thing about gouache paint!).

To be able to carry over this “new-media abandon” to every piece of artwork I do is the challenge. I try and fail often, but sometimes I can do it… and those are the best days!!

“Picasso” Dogs

Between winding up the Silly Class and trying to get my studio in order, I’m working on the drawings to go with the book preorders. These are some “Picasso Dogs,” and the elephants you saw in yesterday’s post…  I’m really enjoying making each one…

Cat Naps

Not much to report except I’m talking a lot of naps lately (allergies?), and I am finally starting to catch up with things… above is a little pet portrait….

Donna J.? I have a really cool piece of art you sent me for my studio wall, but I’ve misplaced your address (so sorry)… can you email me with it? Thanks!

I look forward to getting back into the swing of my studio time just as soon as the Silly Session is over… one more week!

Over and out.

Drawing #2 from 1931 National Geographic references (see #1 here); cut words from a recent issue.

Score! (I think.)

Last week I went to the Goodwill Outlet Store (also know as “Dangerland for Packrats”) and came out with this HUGE stack of National Geographic magazines from the early 1930s. I got them to use for collage material… but now that I have them home, I can’t cut them up. I just can’t do it.

So… I guess will use them for drawing reference material… FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!!

Doodling this Morning

My brain isn’t working very well this morning. Sometimes that’s okay, right?  I started doodling on my to-do list, above.

Then I scanned them in and made these two interact…

And now it’s time to get to work!!

Goat Secret

I really like the above drawing, but it doesn’t look AT ALL how it was SUPPOSED to look when I started. I was TRYING to draw realistic goat from this photo reference:

But when I started drawing the line for the back part of its body, it just looked like a “growth.”

Never mind!!! It’s now a “pack” on its back! Or whatever.

(Secret: I’m not the greatest drawer. But I love to draw… I generally like what I draw… and to me, that’s all that matters!!)

Elephants on the Brain

The elephants just keep on coming. Pretty soon I will have herds enough to fill that elephant ‘zine I’ve had in my head to make… a ‘zine of only elephant drawings and paintings… would it bore you to death? (Be honest now.)

To see the elephant(s) I did for Artfest’s “Iron Artist” Challenge, head on over to Liesel Lund’s blog post… (scroll down to see my piece). That’s the only photo I’ve seen of it, so thank you, Liesel!

And my postcard wall slowly fills… slowly only because I am behind on sending OUT my postcards, and I can’t put them up on the wall until I’ve done my part (it’s a rule). (Joanie H. — this elephant’s for you!!)
