It’s “show-and-tell” time again! (Even though my to-do list is long, and I really shouldn’t, I can’t resist showing you these recent characters from my sketchbook.)
They are made with PanPastel Artist Pastels, ballpoint pen, and eraser (the eraser is very important!).
All three birds started from random applications of the pastels, and then I would smoosh the pigment around with the eraser until something presented itself.
But the dog — heh heh — started as a quick sketch of a blob of tar on the sidewalk while walking with my family… I think I even missed a green light because of it! (But it was worth it, don’t you think?)

I looked at the pan pastels the other night and was over-whelmed at the number of colors; all of them beautiful.
Do you have a suggestion of some colors to begin with?
That may be a question that depends on the artist – and can’t be answered.

Boy, do I have a post for you… about the colors, etc. TK, very soon.
In the meantime, I would decide on the number you can afford, and then pick your favorite red, yellow, blue and “black.” Then, if you can afford a few more, just go with your gut and pick colors you like!!!

I’m doing these in my sketchbook, which is a 5″x5″ hand•book… it’s about 90# drawing paper, and has a tiny bit of texture…
Love the dog with his whiskers too, most definately worth missing a green light for.. My daughter thinks the penguin bird is just the sweetest little thing, and she’s right!
Oh that second bird is priceless! I can´t decide if he is shy, afraid or scheming about something. You´ve really made those pan pastels work for you. I´ve only gotten smudges so far… ha, ha, ha!

Carla, these are great – especially love birdie #2 and the doggie. I’ve never been great with pastels – I still have my chalk set from high school and that was a LONG time ago. These look quite interesting. Are they chalk type or oil? I have oil pastels, water soluable oil pastel, and my ancient chalk set. I may have to try them again.
