The Playing Dog
By DeJeanne E.B.
Once upon a time there was a family of goats. They had a puppy and a butterfly and a unicorn. They played football with a lot of animals. They didn’t know the rules, but they played anyway. They had lots of fun!
I am part of a wonderful project called “Big Class.” If you’re interested in the project, read on!
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Doug Keller and I teach 1st grade at Lincoln Elementary School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, in the Greater New Orleans area. I have recently started work on a project called BIG CLASS that aims to break down barriers between public schools and creative types, giving kids access to a world outside their school walls that will engage with them on creative projects. To learn a bit more, please visit our blog at http://bigclass.tumblr.com/.
For our first project, we are producing a book that pairs the students’ first written stories with illustrations from artists located all over the country (and even one in Hong Kong!). The students are beyond excited for the project, and we believe it is having a profound impact on their burgeoning passion for reading and writing. Some example stories and artwork can be found here, here, here, and here.
To reach the final, most meaningful stage of having printed books in the students hands, we need some help. To print in the quality we’re aiming for- so that it is not a pamphlet from Kinkos but a legitimate book- we need to raise a legitimate amount of money. Please visit our Kickstarter project page and DONATE. There are some awesome rewards for certain donation levels…
Our goal is to raise $1000 to cover printing and shipping costs but, frankly, that won’t even cover the 150 books we’re hoping to make, at least according to the quotes we’ve been receiving from area printers. So please, donate what you can. We will be selling the book in local stores and having a big release and reading event somewhere in New Orleans (look out for information on that in the coming weeks). We will also be working on similar projects in the near future.
Please let me know if there are any questions by e-mailing me at email@example.com. And thank you so much for your time.
