1. It started as a rabbit and turned into a miniature donkeybunny.

2. Here are a few things that have come through my e-box lately from friends that I thought I’d share with you!

3. LK Ludwig is giving away a FREE class to celebrate her new blog. It’s called “The Free Flip Flap Free Journal Class” and looks super fun!

4. Jane LaFazio’s next Sketchbook & Watercolor online class is scheduled to start August 11, and be sure to check out her dvd and the prayer flag project and her contributions there.

5. Jill Berry has listed 10 Reasons to Attend her workshop in Italy in September.

6. Dawn DeVries Sokol is hosting an online doodle camp starting in just a few days!

7. Lyric Kinard invites you to stop by her blog and say hello as she continues a month long sketch-a-day project in conjunction with the Sketchbook Challenge’s theme of Elements.

8. Tracie Lyn Huskamp has just reopened her etsy shop and is having a sale.

9. In other news, Steve’s online class, Shoot Your Art, starts Monday. (I can hear him right now running through his lines for the videos… heh heh, we’re both pretty dorky in front of the camera — it’s HARD!)

10. Wes, Steve and I are working late tonight (Wes is animating for us!), and then going to see the new Harry Potter Movie. Can’t wait!

Busy

Super busy. Just checking in… feeling kind of isolated from you-all so thought I’d pop in and say hello.

The above drawing was made from a quick shape sketch from a water stain that was on the cutting board while Steve was cooking dinner the other night. I saw this creature and grabbed my sketchbook; when Steve saw me drawing, he recruited me to help him by making a salad.

I guess that was fair.

Help Wanted

Um, every time I turn around today Steve is poking a camera in my face.

(We are getting ready to shoot the video for the camp classes.)

The problem is I am terribly camera shy.

But I’m comfortable in the classroom!

So I need help:

How do I pretend a camera lens is 24 smiling women?

In other news, our sons Wes and Christer arrive to Seattle tonight after a long Colorado visit (Wes 3 weeks, Christer 2 months).

(Time to clean house.)

Feedback from Steve’s recent Photo Silly class:

This class was outstanding! Thank you so much for your time, energy, organization, and for offering this wonderful class from a great perspective. I have some obsessive-compulsive nature when I am challenged — and the Photo Silly direction took me away from some of this behavior — I stretched my abilities — and really got out there and had some fun! I loved this class, the assignments, and they took be far beyond my expectations! THANK YOU THANK YOU!      — Mary Ann

Gotta say this class was way more than I expected. Great class, big thank you’s to you and Steve. I really learned a lot about my camera(s) and gained a lot of confidence – knowing I can capture what I see in my little frame. Looking forward to the class on Photographing Your Artwork – that sounds perfect – and PhotoSillyShop and any more silliness you are dreaming up.     — Diane

Hello! The Summer Camp Series was so much fun! The three classes will all be repeated in the coming months: “Junk Mail Artist’s Book” in November 2011 and “Faces 101” and “Imaginary Creatures” in January 2012. Sign up for my newsletter for all the updates (and other fun stuff!). More info here.

Hello! Please join me for ONE  –  TWO  – or all THREE…

Summer Art Camps

Three ONE-WEEK online workshops for kids and adults

DRAWING & PAINTING classes with Carla Sonheim

(These classes are open to ANYONE, whatever your skill level.)

Session 1: August 1-6: Imaginary Creatures
Session 2: August 8-13: Faces 101
Session 3: August 15-20: Junk Mail Artist’s Book

_____________________________________________

Session 1: August 1-5

I m a g i n a r y   C r e a t u r e s

Find and create your own zoo of imaginary creatures from random watercolor marks, blobs of paint, sidewalk cracks, peeling paint and more. But mixed in with this nonsense is a healthy dose of “real” drawing exercises and lessons to help you imbue personality and life into your imaginary animals. We will draw from life, from photos, and from our imaginations. Then you’ll learn my no-fail watercolor tricks to create a series of your own imaginary creatures on paper. You’ll put the finishing touches on with pen, ink, pencil, gesso, charcoal, marker, collage, or whatever else the piece “needs.” We’ll also cover line quality, shading & dimension, and composition.

Take this class if you love animals, want to learn more about watercolor, or just want to explore the “random” and “play” factor in drawing and painting.

Session 2: August 8-12

F a c e s !   1 0 1

In this class we will focus solely on drawing and painting the human face. We will work through dozens of different assignments that allow you to approach your subjects fast, slow, messily, neatly, realistically, abstractly — all this to start getting you to ferret out your own unique and personal style. We will draw from live models, from photos and our imaginations. You’ll use ink, watercolor, pencil, ballpoint pen, charcoal, pastels and more. End goal: You don’t want to draw faces like me or anyone else — you want to draw like YOU! After this week you will get closer to finding your unique style, promise! (P.S. The “101” stands for the 101 faces you will create this week. Yes, it’s a lot. Yes, you will work hard. Yes, you can do it!)

Take this class if you want to try your hand at lots of different drawing styles and methods, love the human face, or want to start developing your own unique face “style.”

Session 3: August 15-19

J u n k   M a i l   A r t i s t ‘ s   B o o k

This is a mixed-media-junkie’s dream project. Junk mail combined with gesso, watercolor, a little swirly technique here, some packing tape there, creates beautiful and complicated textures that you can use as backgrounds for any mixed media projects you currently have going. In this class we’ll use our pages to create an irregularly shaped book. Then, we’ll DRAW! You will begin a drawing on one spread, with the goal of having each image connect to and work with the images from other spreads. The drawing exercises throughout the week will build up to you being able to see more creatively and embrace the “puzzle” nature of this beautiful artist’s book.

Take this class if you love textures, layers, and everything mixed media. This one is just FUN!

Sign up for one, two, or all three camps.

$35 for one session; $65 for two sessions; $85 for all three sessions.

Note: There are three workshops scheduled with a price break if you sign up for all three. If you don’t have time to participate now in all three camps, please know that you will be able to access the course material whenever you want and work the classes at your own pace; the classes will be up and online “forever.”

Here’s the scoop for each session:

• Think “summer camp” and be ready for a week jam-packed with creativity! (Update: If you do all the assignments each day, I estimate it will take about 1 – 1.5 hours each day… but more if you want to settle into it!)

• Each day you’ll wake up to a morning peptalk email with links to your daily schedule, warm-up PDF worksheet, drawing assignment, demonstration video and painting assignment. (Five camp days; five warm-up worksheets; five drawing assignments; five videos; five painting assignments.)

• A password-protected blog dedicated to each class will serve as our clubhouse and will be our meeting place for all of the above, as well as special goodie bag materials and other surprises (including bug spray).

• A flickr group will be created for each session so you can (optionally) share your worksheets, drawings, paintings, and enjoy and learn from the artwork of others. (However, if you are shy about posting your art, I am always available to look at your work via email.)

• Prizes? Of course!!

• A perfect activity to do with your kids during these long, last, hot, dog days of summer.

• The class materials will be up and available for download until “forever,” if for some reason you need to miss a day (or a couple of weeks).

Sign Up for 1, 2 or all 3 classes!!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

• Upon registration, you will receive an email within 48 hours confirming your sign-up. One week before your camp session begins, you will receive a “test” email to make sure you can receive/view everything. (That way, when the camp starts a week later, any mosquito bugs will be worked out!)

• What you will need: You will be able to read acrobat pdf files and view videos.

• Class fee is good for participants living in a single household.
