Jill K. Berry’s wonderful book was released a few weeks ago, and I am the second in line for her blog hop book giveaway! Here it is:
Art tips galore, this beautiful (and beautifully written) book is just jam-packed with smart and creative ways to “map” our personal journeys. She writes in her intro:
You can make a map of nearly any journey, place, day or experience, however menial it might seem. Maps can be intimate and personal, or grand and inclusive. They can be a ritual way to journal your day, or a permanent and elaborate illustration of your life’s journey.
A map is simply a visual record of meanderings, both mental and physical. Here are some ideas for things you could consider mapping.
a day with your child
a dog’s life
a fishing river
a garden
a grocery store
a memory
an island you would like to own
a point of view
DOESN’T THIS SOUND FUN??!! This book makes me want to make a map every day….
I even contributed a map to the book:
If you would like a chance to win Personal Geographies: Explorations in Mixed-Media Mapmaking, please leave a comment here with a map prompt idea, in other words, answer this question: What would be a fun thing to “map”?
I’ll pick the winner randomly December 10th. Thanks!
(Note: The publisher can only ship within the U.S. this time. So sorry, international readers!)
(P.S. If you just can’t wait to see if you win, go HERE for info on how to order a signed copy of Jill’s book!)

I want to map my heart. It has some cracks in it and some mended places, because it has been broken more than once. There are some compartments in it that I’d like to explore to see what’s hiding in them; some of them have not been opened for quite some time. Sometimes it seems fragile and sometimes it seems strong, and that contradiction would require some intense mapping, I think. In fact, I believe I will need to make several maps — perhaps from different views, like outer space, from inside it, from the top, and so on. I eat heart healthy cereal and making some heart maps from the heart seems like a good thing, too.

My journeys is to find me. And that has not been an easy road. I have been counseled by a psychologist, almost admitted to the ward at one time, I have seen a social worker, and then finally a psychiatrist, and then a counselor who was the one that wove the ends together to find me. I like me now.

After we moved into our house, I realized that the desert streets don’t have storm sewers. Coming from the East Coast, I found that impossible to believe–what happens to the water when it rains? So, first real rainstorm, I followed the flow of water and discovered how amazingly complex the system is for draining water. I followed the rushing water through gutters running along city streets for three miles until it poured into a short storm sewer, trash filter, and into a creek. I *had* to map that.

I have a specific map in mind to create that stems from childhood. My grandparents had a lovely rolltop secretary and I spend hours writing at the desk when I stayed with them. I was sure there was a secret compartment in the desk that contained a map of buried treasure. My grandmother promised the desk to me and my plan was to take all the drawers out when it was mine and find that map. Sadly the desk went elsewhere before I could find the map. But recently I found an antique desk very similar (without the secretary part) and the first thing I did was take out all the drawers … just in case. It turns out two of the drawers were reversed and under one was a $1 bill. I put the drawers back in their right places and replaced the dollar. One day I am going to draw that map leading to buried treasure and place it under the other small drawer for someone to find years in the future. I’ve told a few people about putting the dollar back, but the map will be a secret!

I think the fun thing to map would be the birds in my backyard seed feeders. They are so active going from one feeder to another. Sometimes they just sit and watch before they fly to a feeder. Others just feed on one feeder then leave for a while. I have about 12 feeders and it is a busy time of year for them.
I think this map would have to be done on transparencies, with each bird depicted on one page and overlayed on the others to show the ‘traffic’ pattern!
