Animals in Tape: Tutorial
_____________________
Supplies Needed:
• Several different kinds of Washi masking tape (or even just regular masking tape)
• Mechanical pencil
• Smooth paper, about 5″x7″ (I use Fabriano Artistico #140 hot press watercolor paper)
Step 1. Lay down five pieces of tape anywhere on the page. Don’t worry at this stage what it will be; just concentrate on moving the shapes around in a way that pleases you.
Step 2a. Add five more pieces of tape, a different pattern this time. Make sure to overlap these new pieces on top of the previous five pieces.
Step 2b. Before moving to Step 3, turn your paper all around and see if an animal emerges naturally at this point. I saw potentials in each of the directions, but decided to pull out the barking-dog-like one on the upper right.
Step 3. Lay down however many pieces of tape you like (in new patterns, if desired) to “fill out” your chosen animal.
Step 4. Add pencil to define eyes and body shape, and for hair, fur, whiskers, etc. I usually go about this step rather slowly, and add more tape if desired.
Step 5. Done!

This is a simplified version of “Animals in Tape.” A more “mixed-media” version is part of my book, Drawing & Painting Imaginary Animals.
More artwork made in the same way!
Checked out FAQs. Sounds like a lot of fun. Wish I could get the time off from work to attend
Hoi Juul,
Is deze tutorial iets voor jou???

What a wonderful camp – sounds like lots of creative fun to be had.
I would just love to join art camp for women and meet you in person, but it is too far away from Switzerland. I have “make do” with enyoing your newsletters and going back over some of your earlier classes I attended.
This tape dog is fun, it reminds me of the big bad wolf and my grandchilds favorite story about the big bad wolf and the seven little kids.
I wish I could join the art camp!!!! But living in Spain is kind of difficult :)!
The art camp looks amazing! I wish I lived closer so that I could join – or you could do it in Europe next year 🙂
I sure wish there was an Art Camp East Coast! LOL! I have signed up for the newsletter, too. A girl can dream….
edie
Me too!
I remember first hearing about this Art Camp in October. I was imagining myself there and oh did I ever enJOY myself. So, reading the FAQs was reinforcement that I’d dreamt about it and was sending lots of good love and happy dancing to all who will BE there.
In a world full of art technique and how-to’s, your work is a breath of fresh air. I love how you combine freedom with skill. I look forward to owning your books.
Checked out the FAQ. Looks very interesting. Also looking forward to your new book.
I checked out the FAQ and also the camp description – it sounds really so interesting! It’s not possible for me this year to attend, but how knows – I’ve also subscribed to the newsletter to be informed.
Thanks so much, Carla!
I just checked out the FAQ of ART Camp for women. It looks like a great course – and a great place to visit. Such a pity that it is too far away, as I live in the Netherlands in Europe.
I have to make do with the online courses – which is fine actually. I enjoy it tremendously to get together online – with people from al over the world. And I am also looking forward to getting the new book(s).
Anyway – I wish you – and everyone attending your course a very nice time. And hope some day you will visit Europe to teach a summer course. 😉
I’ m already signed up and can’t wait to release my right brain!
I checked out the FAQs. I love that *everything* is included – even the great food.
Hi Carla,
Oh how I wish I could come to art camp! Maybe at some point one will be available in my area-southeastern PA (or nearby Princeton NJ!) In the meantime I so enjoy following your creativity in your mailings! Looking forward to your newest book, too.
Ethel
I checked out the FAQ. This looks like so much fun. I loved you 101 faces so much that I think it would be great to take a live class. Thanks for the tutorial. Plan to give it a go today.

I would love to go to the retreat–but as a retired public school teacher–it is beyond my means. I will start saving for one next year.
I am smitten by Washi tape! It’s the first time I hear about it. I’ll go look for it at my local art store (or tell them to order it!)
Woa – so many of you from Europe thinking along the same lines as I did! I would so volunteer to start organizing a camp in Europe. Have to think about it. Did a “penny-count” – but yeah… too far away.
Very interesting discussion: chocolate. basic necessity or add-on? I opt for the first and wish you all good luck!
wow the tape animal idea is soooo interesting. I just love how creative it is. Thanks for sharing such a fantastic project. Nancy
Love the idea of Art Camp!! Love it!!
I’ve been making my own washi tape by keeping a couple pieces of masking tape stuck to my easel, periodically putting a splash of color on them when I work. Then I peel the tape and adhere it to a plastic sheet protector for keeping until I’m ready to use it in my journal.
Thanks for the animal construction idea!! Looking forward to trying it out!
making your own washi tape- what a GREAT idea from kksantini!!! thanks Carla for bringing the community together!
I never thought about making your own washi tape either. I agree it’s a great idea. The Art Camp looks so wonderful, Carla. If only . . . .
The Art Camp for Women looks to be great fun. And they supply all of the materials! Thanks for the info on the camp. I’ll save the site for the future. Washi tape is my current card making obsession. So, I enjoyed your washi tape animal tutorial. I’m going to give it a try later today. Thanks you!
Art Camp sounds wonderful – as is this tutorial. Great fun!
I visited the faq page. Sounds fun! Thanks for the tutorial, too. Washi tape . . .
I receive the e-mail notices from Art Camp for Women and have begun saving to come to the 2013 camp. Retired and on a fixed income this is a process that gives me a smile each month as I add to the camp fund. Not only does the camp sound like fun, it is an opportunity to gift myself with a lovely creativity time in Colorado. Thanks for the tutorial! Kristin
I just signed up for the news letter for Art Camp for Women and will send them my address. I love your tape animal. I was just showing an older woman how she could start projects by randomly pasting bits of coloured paper on some paper, so I’m going to forward this blog post to her also.
Fabulous, absolutely fabulous!!!!
Love it! A fast and easy stress-free work of (he)art ❤
I’m off to buy tape. I hope so I am planning to go to art camp next summer for some me time!
may want to fix the typo on your link to the art camp page 🙂 I signed up for their newsletter a few wks ago-looks like fun in a beautiful setting!
I can’t wait to meet you and learn from you and create with you at Art Camp this Oct.!!!! How fun that Lori and Lorri keep the camp small, provide all the art materials and invite such great artists to be with us. Here’s to October!
Art Camp for Women sound like a wonderful time. I wish it were on the east coast ! Something nice to dream about for the future, tho.
cool…I think that even I could manage this. Seeing this has pushed me over the edge to buy your new book(it had already been on my wishlist)
The art camp sounds wonderful! I will have to save for next year, I already have plans for this October:( Your work is so fun, I love it!
I have never thought of using washi tape that way — love the little doggie!
oh my gosh, I love it — art camp for grown ups! 🙂
i think i need to add art camp to my bucket list
sounds like fun
i signed up for the newsletter
ARF!
Love washi and can’t wait to try this.
what a fun idea! Have you finished your bird from Ty and Marcia’s class yet 😉
Just checked out the Art Camp for Women page – what am amazing array or workshops and classes on offer – definitely signed up for their newsletter! Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Absolutely LOVE what you are doing with these tape guys!!! And would love to win this~ Thanks again for your generosity in all that you share. Heading off again on Monday for a two week trip including a one week Artist-in-Residence. Your first book is going with me… and will be raiding the stores in Victoria for washi tape!!!
I checked out the Art Camp for Women page because I love receiving my inspiration from you. I certainly would love to be there. I have just a couple more years to teach & then I will not have to try to find a way to have time off work for art.
Wow, I love your animal! And Art Camp looks fantastic. I’m glad to have read your post.
Just spent 20 minutes exploring art camp for women.. What a wonderful opportunity…sounds like a dream. Wish I could participate.
love this — you are quite an inspiration — I have your first book and am looking forward to your new ones also — I have taken two online classes from you and am adding my flowers into many of my art work designs — thanks for this little tutorial —
I would love to attend this retreat someday! Looks fantastic!
The upcoming retreats sound so wonderful! What a wonderful little guy you have created and thanks so much for taking the time to do the tutorial! Also – I love your new header on your site! So stinkin’ cool! (I get you via Google Reader, so I hadn’t gotten to see the new look yet – very nice!)
I love the tape animal. I am so excited to get your two books that I pre-ordered with amazon. Art camp looks like fun. Too bad I have to work!
How fun is that!!!!! I just purchased some washi tape and I know what I’ll be doing tonight. Thanks for the tutorial! I hope to one day go to camp. I’d love to take classes with you and Kelli.
I knew about the Woman’s Art Camp but never thoroughly looked at the details. I did take time to read more on my visit tonight. It’s all pretty amazing. My sister lives in Colorado so I can envision the two of us joining a camp. Now that’s a fun idea!
Having viewed the FAQs (again – I’ve read them a couple of times now!), here is my plan: Get your two new books (already ordered from Amazon). Make tons of art. Sell all of it for tons of money. Then I could possibly afford to go next year. OR win lottery, go this year at the last minute. OR get cash one way or the other, find out where you’re teaching, go there.
Seriously, Art Camp for Women looks spectacular. I bet you’ll have a blast, too!
Talk soon. — Serena
Absolutely fabulous. Thank you so much for the tutorial!
I love this mini tutorial, and can’t wait to see your new book. And I can drool over Art Camp and keep thinking… “someday…”. Thanks for your inspiration.
Washi tape is fun with or without laughing and I will follow your tutorial directions tomorrow as post-blue moon play. I visited the faqs page. The last art camp I took part in we made lanyards and the counselors caught rattlesnakes. This sounds so much better.
I also signed up for the newsletter.
Like your tape creatures!
I can’t wait to recieve the art camp newsletter. I hope it will be something I can attend in the near future. I have not ever used this tape, but am extremely interested in your tutorial. It is the most creative art I have seen lately.
J’aurais tellement aimé pouvoir venir en personne à l’un de tes stages ! (I would have loved to come in person to one of your art camp!)
Amazing – so creative and original!
Well, I love your dog….he looks a bit like a miniature wolfhound with the grey tufts of hair (what did you use for that btw?). He has a cheeky smile just like my son before he gets into some mischief! I did go onto the Art Camp blog however, sadly I don’t think I could ever make it considering I come from Adelaide, Australia….it looks like absolute paradise…. 😦
your dog is adorable! and art camp looks wonderful too. 🙂
Thanks for helping me understand what the Art Camp is all about. I am excited about going now! And of course I love your work! I have been following you since I was introduced to you at AU. Adding an original playful dog from you would be wonderful!
Carla, I think teaching in Europe is in your future! Love the dog.
xo
k
thumbs up for that!
Checked out the FAQ. Looks very interesting. Looking forward to your new books.
dear carla, this tutorial was such fun and i blogged about it here: http://artfromthewell.blogspot.com/2012/09/play-time-with-tape.html. i checked out the art camp faqs and i must say if i had known about this sooner i would have tried to attend, BUT now that i know about it i’ll keep an eye on their class schedules. thanks for letting us in on it. but the way i am an art of silliness grad from 2010… xo
Art Camp sound fun. Trying to get up my creative nerve to attend.
I am getting my quilting supplies off the very top shelf in the garage tomorrow!!!
Yes, the Art Camp sounds like so much fun. Only if I could.
That sounds like my kind of camp. East coast is calling
It is always fun to discover something/someone new to me – adore the tape tutorial. And your books are going on my list. I have checked out Camp…oh my what a fabulous opportunity and experience. I am signing up for the newsletter..who knows what next year will bring.
I would love to own this picture. I’ll make one of my own, it’s too good not to do that, but an original Sonheim would be special! I loved the art camp for women site and hope that next year I can come and frolic and get some good vibes to help me focus. I’ve had 2 1/2 years of health issues – broken knee (wheel chair for 3 months) followed by breast cancer (2 surgeries and a year of infusions – but I doNOT miss my breasts, which kind of surprised me) then the other knee got trashed (75 pound dog who runs full out and doesn’t look where he’s going) – and some losses of pets along the way. I have lost my impetus to get in and create. But, it’ll have to be next year before I can get to an art retreat – and this looks like just what the doctor would order. I have a friend in Seattle, so maybe some day you’ll have a Seattle event and I can come sleep on her couch.
I just blogged about the tape animals I made. You can see them here:

How cool! Thanks for sharing this cool tutorial. Can’t wait to try it.

congrats, Kristin!
What a fabulous creature you created…I love it….I was smiling the whole time I was reading the tutorial….I can´t wait to try to make some:)
Thank you!
