Fairy Tale Set

30 Thursday Jan 2014

FT1setshotHere is a peek into the fairy tale video set that was up the last two weeks… it changed several times and my large stuffed giraffe from last year has, apparently, become my “stand-in.” Steve and Matisse did such a beautiful job designing the set and filming! I am fortunate. 😀

These two images are details of a sculpted bird I made a few years ago, and has never been properly photographed. But here are some iPhone detail shots!

In other news, I’m taking a “Creative Monotype” printmaking class from Pratt Fine Arts Center with instructor Rickie Wolfe. Despite Rickie’s wonderful teaching and Pratt’s great studio, I am just doing the UGLIEST work so far!

😀

If ever there is something suitable to show, I’ll do so!

Thank you for being here and I hope you’re having a wonderful week!

birdlingI woke up flu-achy yesterday morning and was in bed all day… today I’m feeling a bit better, but still in bed!

(The worst thing about being sick is that I don’t get to visit my grandsons!)

This little guy is straight out of the egg… still wet. 😀

Fairy Tales: Last Minute Prep

19 Sunday Jan 2014

The craziest, busiest week behind me — but in a good way! — we are *almost* all set to begin the “Year of the Fairy Tale” online class TOMORROW!

owl1
Thank you to all of you who have signed up… I truly am excited about this year’s “project.”

This “owl” piece was created with collage and Holbein Acryla Gouache paints. The approach to painting this was totally influenced by watching the wonderful Diane Culhane paint in her last two online classes with us.

I hope you have a very enjoyable Sunday! I will… I’m off to the studio now for some last-minute fairy tale fun.

Work-at-Home Tuesday

Hello and happy Tuesday!

I’m working at home today… it’s a “writing/commenting” day and the downtown studio just felt too chaotic for some reason. So I’m quietly home with just the sound of an occasional meow:
natalie
I’m afraid I’m falling behind on email answering, in light of all that’s going on this week (my Life Book 2014 lesson went live yesterday and the Year of the Fairy Tale class begins in less than a week!)… if you have written me and I haven’t responded yet, I will! (Or, if it’s time-sensitive, feel free to bug me again.)

I wanted to mention a few things here, quickly:

1. The only in-person teaching venue on my calendar this year is the new “Art Makers Denver,” September 14-16, 2014. I have had pass on most teaching invitations this year, but I just couldn’t say “no” to Helen Rice, the wonderful organizer of this first-year event. As an owner of two stores/galleries in the Denver area, she’s a real pro and a very nice person to boot.

I will be teaching three classes: “Gelli Plate Printmaking,” “Gelli Plate Printmaking ‘Plus’,” and “Blobimal Artist Books.” All of these classes are (or will be) available as online classes, but there’s nothing like a live workshop, so if you find yourself in Denver in September, please join me!

There are also some great classes by many other wonderful instructors. Click the image below to go to the website!

Artmakers

2. I wanted to thank Teresa Capaldo for featuring me on her blog this week: http://teresacapaldo.com/2014/01/12/featured-artist-of-the-month-carla-sonheim/. Thanks, Teresa!

3. And I wanted to let you know that I added buttons for two different payment plan options for “Year of the Fairy Tale.” I know that cash-flow situations can be difficult, and want to be sure that there is an easier way to join this class if it interests you!

Click here for the new Fairy Tale FAQs page, and scroll to the bottom for two different payment options.

First Lesson, up next week: Character Development!

Hello and Happy Weekend!

I had set aside today to go to the studio by myself and just paint, but it’s nearly noon and it hasn’t happened yet. So, I’m uploading this flower painting and sharing a video with you in the meantime!

My sister-in-law, Amy Sonheim, is Professor of Children’s Literature at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and she happened to be here over Christmas week! So Steve and I (and her son) filmed her talking about FAIRY TALES! She’s delightful, and I hope you enjoy it!

wes2Blessings to you in the new year! The above photo is of Wes and Steve (son and husband) just before Christmas last week… we live in a beautiful place, don’t we?

wes1Wes was home for three weeks from college but is safely back in Annapolis, MD now. We miss him already!

leaves2It was frosty this morning!

I’ve spent the day in bed due to a cold/flu that is persisting… but I’m loving the extra sleep and the excuse to spend quality time with some of my books!

Things gleaned just the last hour:

“There’s no point in looking before crossing the road if you don’t look in the right direction.” — Hector, in “Hector and the Search for Happiness.”

and,

Flannery O’Connor described herself as “a pidgeon-toed, only-child with a receding chin and a you-leave-me-alone-or-I’ll-bite-you complex.” (From “Flannery” by Brad Gooch.)

and finally,

“You need gas for the body, gas for the mind, and gas for the soul.” — Carl Dixon, Texan Self-Taught Artist featured in “Spirited Journeys.”
