Hello and Happy Weekend!
I had set aside today to go to the studio by myself and just paint, but it’s nearly noon and it hasn’t happened yet. So, I’m uploading this flower painting and sharing a video with you in the meantime!
My sister-in-law, Amy Sonheim, is Professor of Children’s Literature at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and she happened to be here over Christmas week! So Steve and I (and her son) filmed her talking about FAIRY TALES! She’s delightful, and I hope you enjoy it!

Have a wonderful weekend!
Amy is so engaging! Can’t wait to enter the world of magic with everyone!
She is indeed delightful! I could (and will) watch this video over and over again! I bet she is a superb teacher…This video makes me even more anxious for the “Year of the Fairy Tale” class to begin!
She’s so cute. And I love what she says about empathy and story structure. Very insightful. THANK YOU.
no sound on the video
I want to sit next to her on a couch by the fire, wearing an afghan and holding a cup of hot chocolate, and listen to her read fairy tales to me all day long.
Me, too! That was wonderful!
…and me!
This was totally engaging! I would love to hear Amy read a fairy tale – I bet it would be amazing!
This would be a good idea for the workshop.
Delightful child in an adult body with the mind of a professor. Love her.
You said that well. I agree!
Fantastic video! Amy must be a wonderful professor!
Thanks to all for giving me another way to look at fairy tales. It’s a perfect segue into the fairy tale class.
Amy is a powerful speaker. If I wouldn’t have already signed up for the class, after listening to her I would have. Maybe she’ll be back for another appearance?
Thank you for sharing your sister with us! She is delightful! So passionate! You are both so creative and talented in the arts! 🙂
wonderful speech. as more as I think about and wait for the cass to beginn as more I know for sure that this is my world – and ever was my world.
Cool! You know how to keep us engaged, Carla. 😉
What a wonderful video of your sister-in-law. Her children and students are so lucky; she’s a great storyteller. And I loved what she says about structure and characters.
And I am with Darlene: if I wouldn’t have signed up , I might have done so after this video.
Ah! to be so childlike! Can that be learned? (:
I had a funny experience. I listened to Amy on YouTube and left the studio for a moment after it finished. Somehow a commercial of poo-pourri followed and was playing when I came back. I thought “Is this a trick? Is Amy now teaching us about empathy live?” Because to watch this and stick with it, you’d need a lot. It was wild. Goes to show that I was already influenced by Amy enough to watch this silly Poo-Pourri commercial all the way through.
What a great conversation! I’d love to sit in her classroom sometime. I, too work a lot with fairy tales. I work with students with language disorders and work a lot with developing story elements, story structure, etc, and these students rely heavily on illustrations for cues and clues. This year will be fun!
Any chance of a transcript next blog? She’d be a great TED presenter! Really inspiring. Thanks.
Wow! great video. Amy is really engaging and I love her take on fairytales. She must be an awesome teacher. FE FI FO FUM is right on!
Loved it!! Thank you for introducing us to Amy. I too am an lover of children’s literature, so would adore listening to her speak again. Maybe she can tell us a story or two during this year of the fairy tale??
