Registration Now Open for “DRAW!” Workshop

Our cat Natalie, on her first night at the new apartment.

I love to draw! To me, drawing is really fun! But that doesn’t always mean it’s always easy or smooth… in fact, it’s the challenge to create a drawing that is both simple and detailed enough to communicate an emotion that drives me to keep drawing!

I am re-running my 21-day “DRAW!” online class beginning April 14, 2014.

I really love this class. We begin with wrong-handed drawings and end up drawing from the human figure! If you have ever said to yourself, “I can’t draw,” I think you will find during this class that this is simply not true! 😉
21 Days • 21 Demonstration Videos • 21 Assignments

Next “live” session begins April 14, 2014.

Whether you draw realistically, stylistically, or hardly at all, this 21-day workshop will give you the motivation, direction, and inspiration to get your pencil moving.

Drawing is fundamentally a language of creativity that we speak naturally as children, and often lose touch with as adults. I believe that anyone can benefit from drawing and that simply making marks on paper is in itself freeing and invigorating.

Abstract Attempts

Abstract I

Abstract II

A few days without making something made me grouchy, so I took a little time this afternoon to try another of Karine’s exercises; abstract watercolors. It was super difficult for me, but wonderful to be challenged in this way.

Out of 16 little studies, these are the only two I liked.

I learned a few things about myself:

1. I don’t like my brushstrokes to “show.”
2. I prefer organic shapes to geometric.
3. I need to paint more. Every day. All the time.
4. I suck. 😉

Regarding #4, don’t worry! I don’t REALLY think I suck, and yet I really DO think I suck. Get it? 😀

It’s just that human thing.

In other news… we’re living in Downtown Seattle now!

And a big THANK YOU to Diane!

When I have the time, I try and follow along with classes by our other teachers! These are my first attempts at abstraction, a la Karine Swenson and her class, “Intro to Abstract Painting.”

Karine’s excellent guidance allowed me to really focus on NOT finding an animal in the marks, for once.

And I always forget how much I love charcoal until I get it out again!

We have been drawing and painting ostriches this month, among other things. 😉 This one is watercolor and pencil on Yupo paper.

Have a great week!

“Roxy,” monoprint
_____________

Steve and I are combining our home and studio into one downtown location this month. We have the keys to the new place, and I’m writing from there now;  we are both really excited about this change!

In the print above, “Roxy,” is ready to play. (A dog in this play position is one of the best things about having a dog, don’t you think?!)

In my Year of the Fairy Tale class, I’ve given myself the mandate to focus on experimentation and play, as I believe it makes for more exciting, meaningful, and personal work.

Apparently Steve and I like to be similarly experimental in our lives. 😉

Living in downtown Seattle is an experiment, and it might not work!

But it MIGHT!

Wish us luck!

I was asked recently by the editors of The Caterpillar, a literary magazine for children out of Ireland, if they could use two of my drawings to accompany some poems.

_2__6500
The Caterpillar is the “little sister” publication of The Moth, an arts & literature magazine for adults.

It’s fun to see stuff published! 😉

I work about a month ahead on the Fairy Tale class. This is an experiment for the third one… I’m not sure it will make it into the final lesson, though, so I felt freer to show it here.

I’m REALLY enjoying my job this year. 😉

Thank you to everyone who signed up! I owe you.
