Diane Culhane came into our studio a few weeks ago to film this little project tutorial for you. She talks about painting using negative space… have fun with it!
And a big THANK YOU to Diane!
Diane is a painter and art educator living in Seattle. She has held two online classes through us, “Between Speech & Silence” and “Table Top: Drawing & Painting.” Both are available as self-study classes now.

This is a wonderful technique that I am going to try for sure and maybe incorporate into a Lifebook assignment! Great for beginners I think!
Great video! I love the depth of background that is created quickly and almost effortlessly by the overlaying and mixing of the darker paint. Thanks Diane and Carla 🙂

It’s fun to watch you paint, Diane! So different from the way that I work…I am sure that’s why it’s intriguing to me. Thanks.

Wonderful! I took your two classes Diane and watching this video made me homesick to view them again and to do some more negative paintings.
This was so fun Diane! Thank you and Carla for sharing this. My flowers came out looking like there might be a hint of spring out there somewhere!
Thank you SO much for sharing this tutorial. Diane is wonderful – I thoroughly enjoyed both her classes, too!! Top Notch!!
Have a Great Day!

Finally, Diane’s new tutorial! I just love so much her art and the inspiring ways to create in her class! Thank you Diane and Carla!
Thanks for sharing, Diane and Carla. I did both classes by Diane, and just knowing that this post was up brought back memories from those classed. I have to admit I played the pre-class interview so often – just to see how you paint – and was very inspired by Dianes use of negative space. Thanks for putting this in a free tuturial.
