I did this painting 6-7 years ago (I believe it was a commission for a little girl’s room, and was about 40″x60″ or so, one of the largest pieces I’ve completed). I found it tonight while searching through my archives looking for images to illustrate an article I’m working on for Lifebook 2014. Here are some details:
Honestly, I’ve cringed a lot tonight, but I admit I did like this piece very much!

I took a class last weekend from Seattle artist Larry Calkins on egg tempera and casein painting (taught at Pratt Fine Arts Center). I really enjoyed the class, but in the end found I wasn’t in a patient enough mood to paint with these particular mediums.
Instead I spent a lot of time with the photocopier and my camera!
Thankfully, the instructor was very understanding!

This summer has been topsy turvy for me for many reasons, and I found out earlier in the week that I have two health issues contributing: anemia AND hypothyroidism… geesh! Anyway, medications are adjusted and I anticipate things improving, starting now!

Class Description
Let’s start by saying that color is invigorating. It is tool that has the power to do no less than lift our spirits and make us happy. If you already feel this way about color — or you’ve always been shy about it and wish to — this is the class for you!
We will start the week by working in our sketchbooks on line drawings that will easily turn into bright, rich watercolors. We’ll draw from fresh flowers…
… and create still lifes from items around your house: 
Next, we’ll switch to acrylics and construct some simple, bold, meaningful, colorful decorative paintings! We’ll work from fresh vegetables…
… and then more abstractly with pixels and “blobs”:
Finally — and as a bonus lesson to really celebrate color in our lives — we’ll build a fabulous flower mobile for your studio from re-used materials including scarves, yarn, and faux-flowers:

Krista Peel was born in Saugatuck, MI and raised in Cheyenne, WY. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, IL in painting and drawing.
She’s lived in Casper, WY, Bloomington, IN, Chicago, IL, Denver, CO and San Francisco, CA. She currently lives in Philadelphia, PA with her husband, Zak.
The only thing she likes more than traveling, is painting. And drawing. And jewelry making. And science.
