I’ve been crocheting a rug. One of those projects that may or may not get abandoned, but it’s been fun to cut up old clothing into narrow strips and knot it together.
It’s very relaxing and competitive at the same time: “Just one more row before bed! Just one more!” Right now it’s about 3’5″ x 2’5″, and I’m hoping for at least 3’5″ x 8′ (for our hallway). A winter project!! I hope you are having a wonderful day.
That’s beautiful! Please post a photo of the finished rug! 🙂
I would live to do this but I always wonder how I would clean it if it was any substantial size because it would be too heavy for the washer. So, how?
How wide are you cutting Your strips
i would love to do this; i’ve been cutting strips and braiding them but not sure how to put them all together, yet. cant wait to see how yours turns out!
The colors look lovely and the used material is interesting. I am sure this is going to be a beautiful rug for your hallway. About cleaning I think you had to do what you do with any rug, you have it drycleaned. I am looking forward to a foto once the rug is in place.
I used to dye men’s old white jockey shorts & t-shirts and cut into strips for knitting. No one knew what the material was – It was my “sexy” secret.
Have fun. When you don’t want to stop think of it as meditative instead of competitive!
Yummy textures and colors! A photo would look good in a frame! Glad to see you are doing something for you! 😀
this would be a fun project for other friends who want to create one of these rugs along with you. please share the width of your strips .. and the size of your crochet needle.
p.s. this would also be awesome as a ‘table topper’!
Are you familiar with The Art Assignment? Making a rug was assignment 10. No hook needed 🙂

Very cool would love to know how to do this
Hi everyone! The crochet hook is large, about the width of my index finger (it was handmade, so it doesn’t have a size on it … sorry!)… the strips of fabric are about 1/2″ wide, though they vary up and down…
oh gosh, yes, please share where you found instructions on how to do this. I love how yours is looking!
Looks great Carla! Is it all single crochet? I taught myself to crochet in July and have made about 12 Beanies and a large knee rug for my Mum. So enjoying it, my daughter wants to learn but I am left handed and she gets all mixed up… I am sure she will get it soon though. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. X
Do you worry about washing it? I am playing with rug hooking… Sometimes I just have to do tactile things!
Terrific! How do you DO this? Directions to begin???
I would love to see the final piece! Crochet is very calming(most of the time). I also discovered the art of spinning my own yarn and THAT is calming! Happy New Year Carla!
Awww! I really love this! And crocheting (like all the “ladie’s works” is like a meditation to me… 🙂
I love crochet rugs! I have made many over the years and they wear well. If it’s a larger one you just take to a laundry mat and use one of the huge front loader washing machines. Most of mine fit in my home washing machine. I love the colors you have going so far ♥ It’s beautiful ♥
gorgeous texture–love it!
I agree! Please post the finished rug! I love the colors in your rug. Old rag rug making is on my list of things I want to do!
