Today I enjoyed reading part of Amanda Palmer’s book, “The Art of Asking,” and ended up looking up her music on youtube, which led me to this video interview with her husband, Neil Gaiman. I liked his hair so decided to paint him.
I’m shy to even post it here (I so rarely try to do “real” people), but do feel I caught him a bit!
Then I set myself to my more usual subjects: a dog and a fox.
Have a wonderful week, everyone!
The man is lovely! Please paint or sketch more people!
Thank you so much for sharing!
I just love all three pics. – and the portrait is so striking.
I love your art – always! I think you did a great job of capturing his likeness. My boys and I are huge fans of Neil Gaiman so I must check out Amanda Palmer now. 😉
Have you viewed the video of him addressing the University of the Arts? It was so inspiring for me and I keep it in my bookmarks:
oops! I didn’t think it would embed the video – sorry!
I’m reading Amanda Palmer’s book right now and really loving it. I like what she has to say about the nature of artists and community and asking. Good job on Neil Gaiman– I like it a lot! It’s always good to try new things.
THanks for the intro to her book and this vidoe as Neil G. is an all time favorite of mine. You certainly need to push away your shyness about drawing people and do more. I LOVE this version of him you have done!
Hi Carla Sondheim,
I love your painting of the dog! Neil Gaiman is good too. I was wondering, what kind of paper do you paint on and what kind of paint do you use?

Wonderful, as always!
hmmmmmm, Carla . . . there’s a resemblance among all three . . . maybe it’s “attitude”!
There’s no doubt you did capture something of him…..but I do love your dog and fox.
yes, you definitely captured the hair!
your figure is beautiful
I knew about Neil Gaiman, but didn’t know anything about his wife or the book you mentioned. I’ll have to check it out.
And yes, you did a great job of capturing him.
I’ve had a Neil Gaiman quote that’s been waiting to jump into my art journal:
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.”
There’s definitely something of him in that. There’s also something of him in the dog, curiously. I love Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer. Her book is wonderful. There’s also an album called “An Evening with Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer” (or similar) that is fascinating listening.
I love the portrait!! You should do them/post them more often, this one is great!
You painted my three children years ago and your portrait of them was delightful. (:
ha ha ha Carla, I’m watching the video, and your drawing really looks like him!!!
good
