Sometimes when I experiment with things I come up with new techniques, and sometimes when I experiment I contribute to the landfill.
Here is the above owl’s progression:

1. Soft pastel.
2. Added a layer of matte gel medium.
3. Added glue stick all over (don’t ask).
4. Trash.

Hate to see a good owl go. .

Carla, your posts are THE BEST!
I just love and appreciate how open and honest you are!
I really, really do want to ask about the glue stick!
#1 with some linework would’ve done me. You win some, you lose some.
That owl looks like he knew there was impending doom.
Dang! Loved it as number 1.
An artist friend of mine says, “it is never too late to overwork something!” I keep that in mind oftenβit makes me smile.
Thank you as always for sharing yourself and your process so honestly with us! Take care! Hugs, Kelly
P.S. #2 is pretty cool as well. Love the softness of 1. π
Thank you!!! So often I get frustrated and rip up the paper. Ah, I feel better now π
What a brilliant idea, to show us an experiment that didn’t quite work out! I think the owl is sweet.
Thanks for “keeping it real” and sharing when things don’t turn out. Encourages us all to keep at it! π Thought I thought he was kind of cute! π
Always fun and insightful to see an artist’s process, even when it fails. Thanks for sharing! The glue stick…I’m gonna guess that it was to cover the page with glitter (hee heee :-))
This post is a HOOT!! (glue stick guess⦠feathers for the poor guy?)
Both one and two are really nice. Love your ongoing experiments. Can’t wait to find out what fun new techniques you’re developing with glue stick or – probably- without. π
This is why I’m always afraid to “add” on – not a good idea. LOVE Kelly’s comment about it being “never too late to overwork something.” A smile for Carla’s post yesterday and one for today for that comment. It is t-shirt worthy π
Bad bad bad glue stick! Put it in the corner! π

Thanks for posting this. It makes me feel better about all the times I’ve experimented and ended up with a pile of yuck.
I like the first one best! Good it is still there (at least in a virtual way..)!
Thanks for sharing this!! It’s a great help to show it’s not always easy, and that’s the way t works with everybody.
That’s kind of funny and not funny at the same time. Certainly makes me feel a lot better. I hate when it turns out an earlier iteration was really the best!
Thanks for this post. Nice to see you also can say “this one doesn’t work” as opposed to “everything you do is a success” And you would post! I’m so into being perfect. Perfect is not it. Expression and openness to experimentation is! xoxo
what is wrong? about the owl? I just learned that artwork can be ugly too, it isnβt always beautiful according to your own values. It is also part of you, your process. Donβt throw it away, it belongs….. Fransje Smit ps I didnβt do much in your course, my own work was calling me and I made a great progress in it. It is about textile and felt and old rusty things. Iβm also teaching in schools and designing projects for children. I hope I can do some free work for Spark later this year……
