This class is about growing our doodles into large 30″x30″ paintings. We all have natural creative impulses, and our simplest drawings contain everything we need to to start (and finish!) big wonderful paintings.
The process I will teach comes from my own journey and we will go step by step from tiny drawings to completed works.
I am excited to share my discoveries about how to take what is already in you — your imagery, your marks, your voice (your DOODLE style!) — and give it direction and intent.
In this painting class we will work with line quality, color mixing, composition and design. I hope it will feed you, fill you up, and make you long for more exploration into your doodles and harvest the gold that is already inside of you.
If you’ve taken the first class, Doings of a Do-o-dle, you’ve already made a start… and this class will continue to take you deeper into your own self expression.

I have been teaching art to Pre-school-adults for 22 years. I feel I am in a rut sometimes. I love to doodle and Zentangle, but not sure how to teach it. I’ve never felt comfortable with abstract art. I would love an opportunity to enhance my teaching and go where I am not comfortable going with my art.

Would love a chance at a class! I usually spend my time making black and white illustrations for coloring sheets and maps, very refined and strict–an opportunity to play with looser lines and paint sounds like a lovely change of pace.

I would LOVE to win a spot in this class! I went to my first in person painting workshop a few weeks ago and really felt like I “could” be a painter! Then, when I got home I saw Diane’s work on your site and I just gasped! I’d love to take this class because I do a lot of doodles and undeveloped drawings and although I would like to take them further because I like the lines or shapes, I don’t really know how to go about doing that, so this class seems like it would be the perfect solution for me!

I completed the 2015 year with Carla and it was great…I work mostly in pen and ink, do mixed media, but i continue to be challenged with letting go with my art, very controlled. I believe that doodling is the very first step to any great art. It helps you work out a problem, it can give you the confidence to move on to something big and is a great stress reliever!

i love these color palettes! i’ve noticed my art swinging more towards precision and cleanliness, and there is definitely a lot of value in that, but i find the flow and discovery process of looser art so much more rewarding. i’ve almost forgotten what it feels like to be loose and playful though!

Doodling is a playground for The imagination. In learning a new-to-me medium of encaustic, I’ve gotten caught up in how to do it and want to stretch into more freedom of expression and loosen up. I want to play with doodling in wax, or create new images to incorporate with new pieces.

I think this class would be awesome to take. The texture and feel of the doodle paintings remind me of encaustic slightly. I recently took an encaustic workshop, but have been exploring ways of mimicking it in others mediums. I think this would be great to explore. I also love the idea of taking my middle school students doodles and having them collaborate to create a 30X30 piece based on this concept. But, it’s always better to learn a technique, practice it, and then teach it so you can help your students be as successful as possible!

I would love the personal engagement. Have been trying to put pen to paper for a very long time. I’ve paid for a few classes through Carla’s website and haven’t had the courage to begin. It sounds a bit ridiculous but don’t know if I’m intimidated or just plain fearful (and I work for a museum, how crazy is that!)

Recently I took a little doodle class and was surprised how fun it was. Diane’s work is so lovely and I wonder if I could do that. I would love to find out. (I may have posted twice. With my red face, I apologize if that is so)

I would love to take this class because I was a doodler as a child (was told to stop by one of my grade school teachers). I eventually became an artist/illustrator but there is a part of me, my inner child, who would love to set herself free with this doodling process!
I would love to win a spot in this class! Doodling is such a great way to jump into other bigger works. It would also help me to take the jump from seeing a blank page & turning it into something unexpected and cool. 🙂
I am an art teacher… I love my students, but sometimes giving all I have to them and my own children makes it hard to find the time and energy required to create. I have felt convicted lately that I need to work on my own pieces (and have them present in class during the process) so my students can see me working (they love seeing work by their teachers). I would like to take the class for several reasons. 1. I know I would paint if I was a part of a class 2. Learn new techniques for myself as an artist and have new materials for my students 3. Are we not all happy when we are creating and doing something we love so much.
As a only child, I spent my time in whimsical world called Traci Land! Not having any mentor or sisters or brothers, I made a creative world of my own starting with scribbles and then doodles trying to feed the something inside I knew was there in my quiet world. I then stared a diary equipped with magic markers in 1974. I was starting high school. Scared. I drew doodles and dates in various colors to represent something significant, some dispguised so no one could read those particular doodles. Caught my mom when I was 17 trying to read my doodles….hmm wonder if she had answered questions!
Now an adult living on a farm, self taught from my own love of doodles. The only place I could start. It is my love to look and say what does that look like? And there it is! That’s how I found Carla with her first book! I was like her! And here I am now still with the stirring of what does that look like?
I work a farm, I used to work for Apple, but I am needed at home to take care of all the animals daily! I still sneak in my art room when I can spare a moment to “what does that look like?” And proceed. I would love to take this class. Blessed!

This sounds like a cross between an abstract and realistic approach. I play with both ideas in my work, but would love to learn how to merge these two worlds.
I would love to take the class to open up some of my creativity…. to take the little bit that I can doodle and actually turn it into a piece that means something.
Love your work Diane. Have used you as a “guest artist” in the past while I was still teaching elementary art. Wish you could have heard the kids ooo’s and aah’s while watching the negative space video! Fingers crossed!! I’m hoping to join the class.

I hate to admit it but I’m not a good doodler. So I need help. This looks like a fun class.
I would love to be in this course, painting, drawing and freeing up some of the ideas that are very likely stuck in the back of my mind behind a classical thought or two.
I would love to win this class. I find online classes like this are so inspiring because I am relaxed in my own home and find it easier to achieve and to share. Starting from a doodle offers a way in that is not daunting.

I love to make lines and shapes and do zentangle. It would be so much fun to bring it into a painting and especially one that’s large since I work small.
Hi Carla, I could not follow from your link to a place to register for a free doodling class, so I hope this finds its way to you. Why take a doodling class? I’ve always wanted to be able to paint something larger than small sketches, “control” an entire canvas. My brain fuzzes over when I’ve attempted to do so in the past (like 30 years ago taking art classes at UT). I suspect control really is the issue – my art is so tight, doodling sounds like just the thing. Your 365 days of art class has been working wonders for my “tightness” in art. Doodling sounds like it could take me to another level. Thanks for offering the free classes. I hope I get one – another online class is not in the budget right now.

I never thought I had any artistic talent whatsoever, but started painting a couple of years ago, then brached into mixed media and watercolors. I have two of Carla’s books (which I love) and have met Diane a couple of times. I am drawn to both of your styles and would love to learn from you. As a single mom, I have to be careful how to spend my money and would love the opportunity to learn from you both. You make it easy to draw and to be creative.
I doodle constantly; even in my head! Some have evolved into large drawings, yet I haven’t had the courage to use paint yet. The thought is very intimidating for me .

I love Diane’s free approach and how doodling sets you free to create even when you feel blocked. I would adore to do this class because it encompasses everything I love about art, freedome to express yourself in a way that kicks the critic out the door.

I am currently taking the “Doings of a Do-o-dle” class and am loving how the online format fits with my life. I am really enjoying the exercises and how they inspire me to be more creative, free, and loose. I recently splurged and bought one of Diane’s paintings and I really love it. As part of our artistic process, I encourage my students to doodle journal. (Doodle in their visual journals as they record notes, conduct visual research and more. ) I’d love to take this class so I can learn another method of using our doodles to inspire original pieces of art!

I would love to take this class because my students love to doodle and often have the question of how to turn the doodles into full blown artworks. How do you do this while retaining the line and feel of the doodle, what choices do you make and how to make them? The concept of doodle as Art is interesting and certainly would stump the academic teachers when they tell the kids to stop doodling and they reply “I can’t its my newest artwork.” Please pick me, I am low on funds.
I primarily work in fusible glass. While that medium allows some spontaneity, it’s not as loose as I’d like. I’d love the chance to play with Diane’s techniques and then figure out how to replicate it in glass.

I teach creativity and painting at a meditation center. In my classes we always doodle at some point. I would love to take this class and learn even more ways to be creative and combine painting and doodling!
I took Diane’s first Doodle class and thoroughly enjoyed it. Recently my (grown-up) daughter asked to start doing some painting together. This is completely new for her, and I don’t want to waste the impetus! I also don’t want to make sure that what we do together will suit her interests as well as mine, and this second doodle class sounds perfect. I would love to take this class because I need to free my body and mind from my medical problems that started in August 2015. I was an elementary art teacher when my problems pstarted. I only taught a couple of weeks at the beginning of the ’15-’16 school year and not since. I’m drowning in disability paperwork and medical bills. This might be just what I need to help get me out of the depressed funk I’m in.
One of my favorite things to do is draw an outline of a figure, or shape, and hide words/names in them with “Zentangles,” which is also a type of doodling.
I guess I missed something. I thought I was registering to win a spot in the class. Under my current circumstances, I can’t even consider paying for the class, as much as I would love to. Unless I’m a winner, I can’t take part in the class. As far as following your blog, is there a charge for that? I’m sorry if I misunderstood. Please let me know the situation.

I would love to take this class. My creativity is in desperate need of a kick start.
I LOVED Diane’s class “Between speech and silence” a couple years ago. The paintings I completed in that class were the FIRST that someone (my son) asked to have, and they still hang in his living room. Now, as caregiver to my husband who is facing brain cancer, this class would provide some therapy for me and help me gain new skills at the same time.
I am waaay too dependent on my back button and eraser tool. I MUST get off my iPad. This might be a good way to shed my anxieties and let things evolve from doodle to painting.

I would love to do this class because Diane is a little bit quirky, a little bit crazy and a whole heap of wonderful. MY difficult life has just started to go up and this class would send it rocketing :).
I doodle a lot. I had to wait for 2.5 hours a few days ago and ended up doodling for most of that time because I forgot my book. It would be fascinating to see what else I could do with it!

I would love to participate in this class because I admire Diane’s art work. Some years ago I took one of her classes and enjoyed it so much. She inspired me to start working with my students on a doodoling journal and we have keep on doing it ever since. In the class she also gave us tips that I started using in my on art improving it and I learned to use different mediums.
I’m a reasonable at drawing but I just can’t seem to loosen up and make the leap to painting, especially in the expressive, intuitive way I admire. I’m trying to transition from more physically demanding art making (ceramics and printmaking) due to health restrictions. I need to find a satisfying way to express myself and this workshop may be just the help I am seeking.

For the first time ever, I have a lovely bit of wall (ooooh!) where I can stick up some paper or canvas, whack up some paint, glue, gesso, and it’s totally okay if there are paint smudges everywhere. That spot so needs a doodle painting to kick things off. No, wait, lets be real – I need a nice, big, loose doodle painting to get all that stuck creative energy flowing again. I’m trying to make more FUN in my life and this sounds FUN. My art has always been tight and I’m finding the free style in the stained glass trees course challenging but want to explore it more. cant see my doddles from meetings being any good on canvas but would love to try it….

Oh my goodness! I love to doodle but rarely take it further. It would be fun to see if I can stretch myself in this class.

The last year or so, I’ve tried to loosen up and become more playful (my guiding word for 2017) through art. I took Diane’s Between Speech & Silence class and LOVED it. I’m taking Carla’s 365 class and LOVE it. I’ve bought Diane’s new book on Doodle/Paint and realized I never really regularly doodled. I have started now. I think this class would help me take my playful quest further!
After nine years of raising kids while doing a PhD, I really need a creative release. I watch my kids doodle so freely, and often think, “I need more doodling in my life!”

As a life long doodler a trait I imagine I inherited from my mother. I have great memories of her doodling and often encouraging me to doodle “(yes draw anything small big don’t think too much.” she would say.) She of course was keeping me busy. Many many years later I see my grown daughters, doodle. I think it is time for the doodles to grow up!

I promised myself I would try all kinds of new and different art forms this year. I have done well exploring everything from learning how to cross hatch an ink drawing to creating a scene with coloured tissue paper and glue. I have a seven year old daughter who draws all the time–she just sits down and starts with no preconceived notion and narrates these fantastic stories as she draws. Diane’s style and body of work feels like that kind of approach, but with a level of sophistication that makes me think of Chagall. I want to tap into that and be able to illustrate and tell stories like Diane (and my daughter!).
I would love to have the opportunity to take Diane’s class because I love to doodle and dabble in paints, but due to lack of direction and confidence, I tend to give up after a while. Aside from being a lot of fun, I think think class would help me to really blossom and finally trust in my own creative voice.
I am not a doodler but I am definitely looking forward to Diane’s Doodle class which I have already registered. I recently received her new doodle book (brilliant). I have taken other courses taught by Diane and find that I become aware of new areas of creativity inspired in each lesson of the Diane’s courses. I would love to take the Doodle class. I have been a Doodler all of my life but never had a word for it. My parent’s home is filled with places were I Doodled on walls, bulletin boards and other permanent “canvases” (sorry mom and dad). I cannot talk the phone or listen to lectures, speeches, etc., without Doodling. It would be wonderful to learn more about this art form and how to expand my creativity.
I would really like to take this class because – for me – art journaling – doodling – creating – etc – has always been a meditative – healing and soul filling experience – my art journal has been a companion through really good times & has seen me through some dark times & right now I find myself going to her often – a few years back – the same month I went into remission from breast cancer my husband was diagnosed with ALS – and with the constant changes & day to day uncertainties – my art journal is a constant – i’ve been finding it hard to access that part of my brain that allows me to stop thinking – just let go and doodle – i’m not sharing my situation for pity or sympathy – but thank you for offering online classes and let you know how valuable they are – with their flexibility- to someone like me – i’ve taken several of Carla’s classes & find that whenever I’m creating it feels my heart – allows my spirit to dance and my soul to soar – thanks for reading my share –

Most of the work that I’ve done over the years has been very tight and detailed. Lately, I’m trying to loosen up, paint freely without reference material and paint from a source that’s deeper than what can be seen… It seems like the doodle classes would help tap into some of these ideas.
While homeschooling my two girls, it has been important to me to include art in their studies. We have enjoyed a few online classes and have loved meeting people and seeing their art from around the world. Thank you for this opportunity!

I think this is the class I need to get confident with my own mark making. When I have allowed myself to keep a regular art journal (inspired by Carla and Lynn) I was able to see what comes naturally to me and just started to like it. More confidence is definitely needed. Would love this class!

After a long stressful school year, I could use a little doodle art therapy in my life.
I would love to take this class. I have started art journaling and sometimes I am just stuck staring at a blank page. I would love another way to start my painting.

Yes, I would be great to win a spot in Diane’s class. I can doodle. Painting is a bit of a challenge so it does seem like a good place to state.

This class looks like fun. Doodling had become my favorite way to express the view of the world. It would be exhilarating to learn to combine paint and doodle taking it to a new level.

Thank you for the chance to win! I doodle all the time. I make greeting cards with stamps and ink, paint, etc. I think this technique would work perfectly on some of my greeting cards.
This class is the answer to a question I’ve been contemplating…is it possible that my doodling which is so fun and in the flow could evolve into a “real” painting? Im so excited! =)

I LOvE to doodle and I LOvE to paint but sometimes it seems like one is with my right foot and the other with my left. I would LOvE to take this class because maybe, just maybe, Diane could show me how to do the two at once so I might not just walk, but hop, skip, jump and run and that would make my head and my heart sing! 💛

This class sounds quite interesting because I feel like my life has been a consistent doodle, and over the years it has raveled itself up into a dull ball inside my creative soul. Lately, that doodle has been trying to get out, to express itself with shapes and textures, to shout at the world in a huge explosion of color!

I would love to take Dianne’s class. I have never taken one of her classes, but love the looseness and flow of her technique. It would be very exciting to participate!
I used to love to watch my mom, a travel agent back in the day, doodle as she talked with clients on the phone. And every now and then scribble down needed information. This was so many years before THEY realized that doodling is good for your brain and helps you retain information. I would love to win a spot in this class certain will thoroughly enjoy it!
