Hi!
Last week I attended a writing workshop at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, with Lynda Barry and Dan Chaon: Writing from Workbook 52. It was terrific!
We worked hard. We wrote a lot, and we also DREW a lot!
Here are some of the index-card “attendance cards” Lynda had us do each day (a self portrait in some situation or other). My class name was “Ms. Scribbles”:
In Space…
Turning into an animal…
Dancing with a bear…
And something we had done the day before, as Batman…
Lynda Barry is super funny and we laughed almost non-stop! On the last night of camp, she showed Dirty Dancing, and the next day we had to draw ourselves dancing with Patrick Swayze:
Thank you to Professors Peanut and Frightwig for a great week!
So fun 🙂
How wonderful! I love Lynda Barry and I love your selfies!!
Brilliant!
Wonderful idea, love these. You are oozing imagination and talent.
Sounds like fun! I live in the next town from Rhinebeck, in Staatsburg. Wish I knew you were here. Would have loved to meet you in person. Love 365 and your other artists. I took a Jane Davies class at Omega in June. And Dar James was sitting in front of me. Had great fun together.
Oh joy! Wonderful! I hope that you save these index card self portraits! My favorite is Ms. Squiggles! I recognized that little girl in that portrait from other works by your hand throughout the years. I am excited to see your writing with your drawing more in the future!
Wow Carla, Your portraits are fabulous and I am super impressed you got to work with Lynda Barry. This is a dream of mine. So cool.
Sounds like a wonderful adventure!
Love your drawings! Especially Patrick Swayze!! Looks like you had a fun week!
hahaha, you brightened up my day! Again 🙂
OMG, I’m so jealous. Love her books and style (as seen online), which I could’ve been there too. And you dancing with a bear is the best!
My son gave me Lynda’s book for Christmas one year. It’s a fantastic book. My son graduated from Center for Cartooning Studies in White Water Junction, Vermont. Lynda Barry was a guest instructor. He got me interested in her many years back. Your experience sounds awesome.
I’m so happy for you that you got to take Lynda’s class… I have 2 of her books, and I’m so enamored by her teaching style. On my bucket list for sure!
