Steve and I will be married 25 years on June 19th. So I’m doing a little countdown here at the blog and will continue the Something FOUND, Something WRITTEN, and Something MADE format.

Something WRITTEN
I missed another day, but this time it wasn’t Steve’s fault.
(HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!)
Seriously, I feel bad. But today is a new day!
So far in this Countdown we’ve talked about Steve’s bicycle (aka “the other woman”) and throw pillows.
So today we will naturally turn our attention towards Steve’s cooking.
When we first got married we shared the cooking duties. There were several dishes I was pretty adept at making — spaghetti, dried chicken with frozen peas, and Wendy’s to name a few.
The problem was, I never seemed to make enough food. Before I got married, if I cooked, I ate leftovers for days. But after the ceremony, each time I made dinner I watched with dismay tomorrow’s lunch and dinner inhaled by Steve. All of it. And then, “You only cooked ONE chicken?” he would ask incredulously.
Our schedule looked something like this:
Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays: Steve Cooks = Everyone Happy
Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays: Carla Cooks = Everyone Unhappy.
We limped along this way for two years.
Then I got pregnant with Wes, and during the three months of pretty terrible morning sickness, Steve kind of took over the kitchen.
And it’s been that way ever since; Steve has done all the cooking for more than 22 years.
I know.

For many years my husband did all the cooking as well. I comuted to NYC and we’d be eating at 9 at night if they all waited for me to cook. And with a child at home that’s just ridiculous.
Now I’m retired and he’s working so I do most of the cooking. Folks shouldn’t get so hung up on gender roles and focus more on practicalities. Just makes married life easier!

Oh, not having to think about what’s for dinner every night! Heaven! 😀

You just gotta love a guy who cooks!

I’m a pretty good cook, it must be said, but my husband is much better than I am. Funnily enough, that was something we also learned when I was crippled by morning sickness. There are only two problems with my husband’s kitchen skills: a) he makes a total mess when he cooks and uses every pot, pan, and utensil we own and b) he rarely ever cooks because his work life isn’t conducive to him having the time to cook.

That’s okay. You have other gifts.

I’m glad that Steve cooks. I’m glad that you do what you do! I do most of the cooking and my husband cooks when we go stay somewhere with no TV or when I’m too exhausted to get off the couch. He can follow a recipe pretty well. It’s good when we see how we might promote marital harmony and make the effort.
