Hello! The Summer Camp Series was so much fun! The three classes will all be repeated in the coming months: “Junk Mail Artist’s Book” in November 2011 and “Faces 101″ and “Imaginary Creatures” in January 2012. Sign up for my newsletter for all the updates (and other fun stuff!). More info here.
Hello! Please join me for ONE - TWO - or all THREE…
Summer Art Camps
Three ONE-WEEK online workshops for kids and adults
DRAWING & PAINTING classes with Carla Sonheim
(These classes are open to ANYONE, whatever your skill level.)
Session 1: August 1-6: Imaginary Creatures
Session 2: August 8-13: Faces 101
Session 3: August 15-20: Junk Mail Artist’s Book

Session 1: August 1-5
I m a g i n a r y C r e a t u r e s
Find and create your own zoo of imaginary creatures from random watercolor marks, blobs of paint, sidewalk cracks, peeling paint and more. But mixed in with this nonsense is a healthy dose of “real” drawing exercises and lessons to help you imbue personality and life into your imaginary animals. We will draw from life, from photos, and from our imaginations. Then you’ll learn my no-fail watercolor tricks to create a series of your own imaginary creatures on paper. You’ll put the finishing touches on with pen, ink, pencil, gesso, charcoal, marker, collage, or whatever else the piece “needs.” We’ll also cover line quality, shading & dimension, and composition.
Take this class if you love animals, want to learn more about watercolor, or just want to explore the “random” and “play” factor in drawing and painting.

Session 2: August 8-12
F a c e s ! 1 0 1
In this class we will focus solely on drawing and painting the human face. We will work through dozens of different assignments that allow you to approach your subjects fast, slow, messily, neatly, realistically, abstractly — all this to start getting you to ferret out your own unique and personal style. We will draw from live models, from photos and our imaginations. You’ll use ink, watercolor, pencil, ballpoint pen, charcoal, pastels and more. End goal: You don’t want to draw faces like me or anyone else — you want to draw like YOU! After this week you will get closer to finding your unique style, promise! (P.S. The “101″ stands for the 101 faces you will create this week. Yes, it’s a lot. Yes, you will work hard. Yes, you can do it!)
Take this class if you want to try your hand at lots of different drawing styles and methods, love the human face, or want to start developing your own unique face “style.”

Session 3: August 15-19
J u n k M a i l A r t i s t ‘ s B o o k
This is a mixed-media-junkie’s dream project. Junk mail combined with gesso, watercolor, a little swirly technique here, some packing tape there, creates beautiful and complicated textures that you can use as backgrounds for any mixed media projects you currently have going. In this class we’ll use our pages to create an irregularly shaped book. Then, we’ll DRAW! You will begin a drawing on one spread, with the goal of having each image connect to and work with the images from other spreads. The drawing exercises throughout the week will build up to you being able to see more creatively and embrace the “puzzle” nature of this beautiful artist’s book.
Take this class if you love textures, layers, and everything mixed media. This one is just FUN!

Sign up for one, two, or all three camps.
$35 for one session; $65 for two sessions; $85 for all three sessions.
Note: There are three workshops scheduled with a price break if you sign up for all three. If you don’t have time to participate now in all three camps, please know that you will be able to access the course material whenever you want and work the classes at your own pace; the classes will be up and online “forever.”

Here’s the scoop for each session:
• Think “summer camp” and be ready for a week jam-packed with creativity! (Update: If you do all the assignments each day, I estimate it will take about 1 – 1.5 hours each day… but more if you want to settle into it!)
• Each day you’ll wake up to a morning peptalk email with links to your daily schedule, warm-up PDF worksheet, drawing assignment, demonstration video and painting assignment. (Five camp days; five warm-up worksheets; five drawing assignments; five videos; five painting assignments.)
• A password-protected blog dedicated to each class will serve as our clubhouse and will be our meeting place for all of the above, as well as special goodie bag materials and other surprises (including bug spray).
• A flickr group will be created for each session so you can (optionally) share your worksheets, drawings, paintings, and enjoy and learn from the artwork of others. (However, if you are shy about posting your art, I am always available to look at your work via email.)
• Prizes? Of course!!
• A perfect activity to do with your kids during these long, last, hot, dog days of summer.
• The class materials will be up and available for download until “forever,” if for some reason you need to miss a day (or a couple of weeks).
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Sign Up for 1, 2 or all 3 classes!!
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
• Upon registration, you will receive an email within 48 hours confirming your sign-up. One week before your camp session begins, you will receive a “test” email to make sure you can receive/view everything. (That way, when the camp starts a week later, any mosquito bugs will be worked out!)
• What you will need: You will be able to read acrobat pdf files and view videos.
• Class fee is good for participants living in a single household.

Carla,
I’m squealing with delight about your classes! The timing is perfect for me – I’m off for the summer because I’m a teacher, but I’ve been busy this summer.traveling, taking the PhotoSilly course, training my dogs. I’ll be done with the big dog show where I’m doing some canine freestyle routines with several of my dogs (it’s the third weekend of July) and the teachers have to be back at my school starting the week after your last class ends. This leaves me lots of time to play with art, yipee!

I cannot wait till August for your class. I find that I need some type of structure to create. I can sit there and have these ideas in my head, but I cannot get them down on paper, fabric or canvas.
